If you are hearing ringing, buzzing, or hissing in your ears, your first thought is likely:
“Something is wrong.”
Let’s be clear:
This sound is not dangerous.
What you are experiencing is called tinnitus. It is a benign signal generated by the brain.
The brain constantly processes sensory input. When there is even a small change in auditory input—something that can happen with normal life—the brain can generate a sound.
This is the brain creating a signal.
The brain is designed to scan for threat.
When it notices a new internal sound, it asks:
